Personal & Process Safety

Safety is a Core Value

2015 Social Responsibility Report

At Tesoro, we strive for an incident-free workplace. Our people are the foundation of our success and we are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our employees, contractors and neighbors in the communities where we operate.

To meet these goals, we work to eliminate or mitigate risks by identifying, evaluating and continuously learning from the few accidents that do occur. This practice can help prevent incidents from occurring.

We also work collaboratively with industry experts to establish and constantly refine best-practice standards that improve workplace safety. For example, we participate in a safety program with the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) to share what we have learned. We also continually improve our operations by offering training, and implement new programs that protect our employees.

We strive to cultivate a culture in which our employees are committed to their own safety and the safety of their colleagues. Our employee compensation programs are tied directly to improving environmental, health and safety performance, which helps drive accountability, alignment and commitment across the Company. By offering a wide variety of training and tools that address safety and compliance, we empower every employee to take ownership of ensuring safe work practices.

In 2015, the AFPM recognized our Anacortes refinery with a prestigious safety award, while our Mandan, Martinez and Salt Lake City refineries received awards of merit for their safety performance.

Personal Safety

Personal Safety at Tesoro
The health and safety of our employees and contractors is a Core Value and a top priority for everyone at Tesoro. Each individual has personal responsibility for safety and for meeting our safety standards and policies. Our key safety indicators are measured and reported regularly to reinforce commitment and to ensure each employee and contractor is focused on our safety goals. Through regular training, we empower employees and contractors to identify potential risks and take necessary actions, up to and including stopping work if there are safety concerns.

Our safety standards comply with and often exceed federal, state and local regulations. We conduct regular and rigorous audits, assessments and program reviews to ensure these practices are being followed and to identify areas for improvement.

For the contractors who work on our behalf, we have a program that evaluates, measures and qualifies their safety performance before and during the contract. This program helps to ensure that everyone working for Tesoro upholds our core safety values and serves to improve our overall performance.

Process Safety

Process Safety at Tesoro
Our facilities are designed, operated and maintained to ensure our people, neighbors and assets are safe. We enforce a disciplined framework that includes comprehensive design principles and engineering, operating and maintenance practices to preserve the integrity of our operations.

Each year, we spend hundreds of millions of dollars on routine maintenance, regulatory projects and turnarounds—planned, periodic shutdowns of a refinery for maintenance. During these turnarounds, we perform maintenance, overhaul operations, and inspect, test and replace equipment in the refinery. Our turnarounds are scheduled throughout the year to sustain the safe and reliable operation of our refineries.

We also use industry-recognized methodologies to assure process safety and asset integrity, and reduce the risk of incidents. We have implemented fundamental safety practices throughout our operations, including change management, mechanical integrity assurance, incident investigation, process hazard analysis and a strong safety culture.
